Traditional dental X-ray film has been the patient diagnosis standard in dentistry for most of the 20th century. We have become accustomed to exposing the X-ray and then taking it to the film processor and waiting for six minutes for it to develop. If the image was not perfect, and another x-ray had to be taken at a different angle, more time was wasted repeating the process. Now with the addition of digital radiography to our practice, the wait is over. Within three seconds of exposing the film, we see the image on our computer monitors. Not only is this a time saver, which allows us to diagnose your problem and get right to work to treat you, but there are several other benefits as well. Once the image is captured, it can be digitally enhanced with magnification, color, improved contrast, or annotations to point out areas of concern. The risk of lost or misplaced X-rays is gone, as they are saved in our computer hard drive, which is regularly backed up. These images can then be immediately emailed to a specialist for evaluation if a consult is needed. Furthermore, for your benefit, the X-ray sensors that are placed in your mouth are much more sensitive than film. That means less radiation is needed to expose these digital X-rays. It is a win-win situation, and we are thrilled to be able to offer this wonderful technological advancement to our patients.
